This paper reports on some factors that influence a student's choice, perception and motivation to use computer technology for a speaking and a writing consultation service, based on interviews and student-teacher online discourse patterns. It also discusses the motivation behind the choices with reference to Deci and Ryan's self-determination theory and Wenger's social learning theory. It was found that a student's previous learning experience and psychological needs shape their perceptions of, participation and behavior in online consultations. Suggestions for preparing students for a new learning experience in higher education are made.
