SUMMARY Evidence is presented for a direct effect of cortisol on the rate of red cell lysis in vitro. It is suggested that this effect is due to the mineralocorticoid action of cortisol. The finding may be relevant to certain disease states especially paroxysmal nocturnal haemoglobinuria, in which the rate of haemolysis is inversely related to plasma steroid levels.
