An interpretation is provided for the radiation emitted by optically thick resonance lines produced from laser-heated plasmas. The profiles and total intensities are shown to be sensitive to the spatial profiles of the laser energy deposition. Results are presented for the helium-like resonance line of Al XII. It is also shown that Holstein’s photon escape approximation badly underestimates the emitted line radiation.
