ADVANCES in medical science have extended the mean and median life-span in recent years, but maximum life-span has remained about the same as in antiquity.1 Little is known about the origins of senescence, and little agreement exists regarding the true nature of the aging process. One would not hesitate to include conditions such as graying of hair, wrinkling of skin and arteriosclerosis, while excluding embryogenesis, pubescence and maturation.
