Abstract Time series of temperature and precipitation from a 3‐year integration of a 5‐level general circulation model (Corby et al. , 1977) by the Dynamical Climatology branch of the U.K. Meteorological Office are studied. These are used to establish, and criticize, the ability of the model to simulate some aspects of the observed climate in a single grid box of the model (the eastern England grid box). Problems concerning the comparison of time series of model data with time series compiled from meteorological observations are discussed and some techniques for overcoming these problems developed.
