Abstract Selected literature was reviewed to identify conceptual and methodological issues in research on nurse practitioner practice. Conceptual issues include definitions of the independent and dependent variables. Methodological issues discussed include samples, comparison groups, sources of data, quasi‐experimental design, standards of care, and cost analysis. Implications for increasing the meaningfulness and rigor of research in primary care are presented.
