ABSTRACT The P3 and N400 waves of the human event‐related potential were recorded during a naming task. The number of possible pictures to be named was manipulated between experimental conditions. The amplitude of the N400 was directly related to the number of pictures possible in each condition. The scalp distribution of the N400 showed an anterior negativity and a posterior positivity. This was probably the result of an overlapping P3 wave. The N400 may represent the activation of memory search and the P3 the updating of target‐expectations. Both may occur simultaneously.
