Measurements were made with strain gages of the magnetostriction of gadolinium single crystals. The four constants necessary for a description of a hexagonal crystal were evaluated over the temperature range of 4 deg K to above the Curie point, using fields up to 30 kOe. The forced magnetostriction was determined by measuring the deformation ( lambda ) as the field was changed from 10 to 20 kOe. The effect of magnetocaloric heating was observed but the measurements of lambda were made at constant temperature. (W.D.M.)
