A method for estimating absorbed dose per unit exposure for selected organs resulting from diagnostic fluoroscopy used with artificial pneumothorax is presented and evaluated by comparison with appropriate published data. Generally good agreement is seen with these comparison data, especially with a Monte Carlo radiation transport technique when soft tissue sites are encompassed by the primary beam. Consequently, it is felt that these empirical data, augmented with Monte Carlo calculations, form an acceptable dosimetric basis for an ongoing epidemiologic study of carcinogenic risk associated with low doses of ionizing radiation.
