Lithium layers, studied in static ultrahigh vacuum, exhibit two absorption bands; one, located at about 300-nm spectral region, has a position independent of the thickness of the deposits, whereas the other, which varies from 565 to 785 nm, depends upon thickness. An electron-microscope study reveals the structure of the layers under consideration.
