A. Avdeev, A. Blum, I. Troitskaja. Russia's Historical Demography. Russia's Historical demography has hiterto been restricted to a study of variations in population size. Nevertheless, there are plenty available very rich — though late — nominal records. This paper explores the chief demographic sources, especially parish and assessment registers. Revision lists and detailed census offer informations which open new prospects. Nevertheless, the value of these sources does not decrease with the end of the ancient period. The great upheavals which have left their imprint on Russia after the Revolution have opacified the dynamics which could be determined through statistical sources only. The use of the méthodes of historical demography, building upon twentieth century nominal records, would provide, according to the authors' opinion, valuable help for the on-going reappraisal of the social history of Russia.
