Preliminary results of a prospective clinical trial show a statistically significant increase in oneyear survival in patients with esophageal carcinoma given split-course radiotherapy as against similar patients treated in previous years with conventional fractionated courses. In addition, symptomatic relief and length of relief were at least as good in these patients. A prospective randomized study is being considered.
