A study was conducted among 304 American college girls to determine their level of contraceptive knowledge. The following categories of youth-culture variables were correlated with contraceptive knowledge: 1) origins of contraceptive information; 2) casual dating pattern; 3) courtship pattern; and 4) campus involvement. 14% of the girls were uninformed 54% adequately informed; and 32% well informed about contraception; among upper classwomen even higher percentages were at least adequately informed. Year in school was correlated with sexual kn owledge. Peers were the most frequent and best source of sexual information; parents were an infrequent source of knowledge. 73% of the girls understood the condom method but much fewer understood any female contraceptive technique. The knowledge of female-oriented methods was associated with contact with older women.
