Abstract The menopause marks the transition from reproductive to non-reproductive phases in a woman's life. It may be regarded as a time of both disappointment (loss of femininity, onset of senescence) and relief (no further conception and menstruation). The menopause is associated with hormonal changes, particularly reduced oestrogen production. This paper reviews the effect of the menopause on sexual functioning and discusses the role of hormone replacement therapy in preventing sexual difficulties.
