Because they have no voice, the environment and future generations are all too often ignored in decision‐making, both at the macroeconomic level and in the firm. This article makes the case for explicit recognition of these interests as stakeholders. At the level of the firm this might be done through the appointment of a non‐executive “Environment Director” with specific responsibility.
