The emission of electrons by laser beam targets was investigated. A ruby laser was used with a carbon target while carbon and tungsten targets were used with a neodymium laser. The results indicate that the emission arises from the extremely rapid heating of the focus spot to very high temperature and that very high-current-density electron pulses of extremely short pulse width can be produced in this manner.
