Abstract A statistical model of a water‐vapour absorption band is discussed, and comparison with computations made by Cowling shows that it provides a very accurate account of the average transmission over narrow frequency bands. The model can be used to compute the atmospheric transmission by water vapour under conditions of meteorological importance which were not treated by Cowling.
