The use of present-day cadastral maps for computer-aided information systems requires, over and above the pure digitisation of the map information itself, the thorough geometrical improvement of locational data. For this, the inhomogeneities between the individual sheets themselves, or between the graphically obtained coordinates on the one hand and the more precise coordinates obtained through measurement and calculation on the other need to be removed as thoroughly as possible. Following this, the geometrical conditions contained in the graphical structures need to be restored in the digital data file. These measures result in specific demands being made of the map digitisation procedure and of the storage in a corresponding graphics system. The following article describes the conceptional foundations of a program system called DAVID (which in German stands for: Digitalisierung, Aufbereitung und Verbesserung inhomogener Daten) and which was developed for the digitisation, preparation and improvement of inhomogeneous data from cadastral maps.
