The quadratic term in the hyperfine pressure shift, recently observed for alkalies and muonium in noble gas atmospheres, is interpreted in terms of the interaction between three atoms. Approximate calculations show that short-range contributions predominate, even for heavy atoms. The results of the theoretical estimate are in reasonable agreement with the experimentally observed values in view of the approximations used.
