Attention is drawn to critical percolation probabilities for lattice models in which the range of interaction extends as far as third neighbours. By considering the limit of infinite range an estimate is obtained of the critical probability for a random system of spheres or circles. The estimate is compared with Monte Carlo results. The agreement is reasonable but it is suggested that Monte Carlo estimates are on the low side.
