Abstract Research in domain knowledge has progressed to the point where it should undergo further examination. As a basis for that reexamination, the nature of domain knowledge and its relationship to other knowledge forms are considered. The status of research on expert-novice differences, on the relationship between domain and strategic knowledge, and on misconceptions is also explored. Clarification of the boundaries between expert and novice performance, a research agenda that incorporates domain and strategic knowledge as partners in knowledge acquisition and use, and specification of the terminology used to examine misconceptions are called for.
