Summary Summary Family allowances in France date back to the first World War, though they did not become universal until the early 1930's. The author traces the development of these allowances, and of other benefits given by the French State to those with families. As such services are now intimately connected with the general scheme of social security in France, the place which services designed to aid the family have in the system is explained.
