Journal Article Interpretation inlslamic Law: The Theory of Ijtihād Get access Bernard Weiss Bernard Weiss 1Bernard Weiss is Associate Professor, Center for Arabic Studies, The American University in Cairo. This paper is based largely on my recent studies of the legal writings of Sayf al- Dīn al Āmidi (d. 1233 A.D.). I have tried, however, to avoid points of doctrine which are unique to Amidl and to concentrate on points which represent what appears to me—from my more limited knowledge of the writings of other Muslim authors, both medieval and modern—to be the common doctrine of Muslim legal thinkers generally. For information on Shī'ī doctrine, I have relied heavily on Shaykh Muhammed Ridā al-Muzaffar's Usūl al-fich (Najaf, 1971).
