Prognosis in patients with carcinoma of the prostate

Records of patients with carcinoma of the prostate admitted to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania over a 10-year period were reviewed. During this time, most patients were treated with early hormonal therapy. Various parameters were correlated with survival and attempts at prognosis using these findings were made. Histologic type, stage, and age of presentation seemed to be important in prognosis, while acid phosphatase level, race, and length of symptoms before diagnosis, except for localized lesions, were not. Patients with previous cardiovascular disease died more often of cardiovascular disease than those without previous cardiovascular disease, but did not exhibit a higher overall mortality than the latter.
