A novel use of DNA as a platform to tailor interparticle attraction and repulsion in micro- and nanosystems (see figure) is described. The total interparticle energy is regulated by balancing attractive forces generated by complementary DNA hybridization with steric repulsion provided by noncomplementary DNA. This allows for the control of assembly kinetics, size, and structure of both DNA-capped micro- and nanoparticles.
