Abstract This article confirms that public–private partnerships in the defence industry share both economic and political dimensions. Restructuring and consolidation will result in greater strategic integration and firmer links between defence companies and government. Tasks currently undertaken by independent security companies can also be performed by government intelligence and security agencies. By drawing on the knowledge of defence industry experts it is possible to provide a more comprehensive understanding of what corporate intelligence is. Corporate intelligence is establishing itself as a separate body of knowledge. Copyright © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
