Abstract Methyl 2‐cyanoacrylate‐2‐ 14 C, ‐3‐ 14 C and ‐ 14 CN tagged monomers were im planted subcutaneously in mongrel dogs and their urine assayed for radioactivity. The results show that the urea from the ‐3‐ 14 C was radioactive and radioactive acidic components, as well as neutral moieties, were present. Urea recovered from the urine of animals in which the ‐2‐ 14 C and ‐ 14 CN methyl 2‐cyanoacrylate were implanted was only very slightly radioactive. The data are consistent with the hypothesis that hydrolytic chain scission and ester hydrolysis may be involved in the degradation of 2‐cyanoacrylates in vivo .
