The scattering of helium and deuterium from platinum (111) surfaces whose crystallographic order and structure has been characterized by in situ LEED measurements in an ultrahigh vacuum system (≈ 10−10 torr) is described. The effect of surface temperature, gas temperature, incidence angle, and lattice stiffness are in qualitative agreement with the cube theories and thermal roughening of the surface. Indications of the excitation of internal degrees of freedom are discussed. The use of a dc detection system allows mass balances between the incident and scattered beam which agree within 3%.
