Nike just did it: International Subcontracting and Flexibility in Athletic Footwear Production

Abstract DONAGHU M. T. and BARFF R. (1990) Nike just did it: international subcontracting and flexibility in athletic footwear production, Reg. Studies 24, 537–552. Over its twenty-five year history, Nike has developed a complex set of production alliances with manufacturers in South East Asia. Athletic shoe production now takes place under several different subcontracting arrangements. Based on interviews with company officials, this paper describes in detail Nike's present production partnerships, which include conventional capacity and complementary subcontracting types, as well as newer forms. The study opens with brief histories of the athletic shoe industry and the company. Analysis is directed toward understanding the global production of Nike shoes in terms of the 'New International Division of Labour', the nature and form of vertical disintegration and production subcontracting, and the current debate surrounding industrial system flexibility. We show that Nike's subcontracting system allows the company a high degree of versatility in dynamic and fluid markets. We conclude by suggesting that Nike's production system represents an alternative post-Fordist vision of industrial organization to 'flexibly specialized' manufacturing. DONAGHU M. T. et BARFF R. A partir des interviews avec des responsables, cet article présente dans les moindres détails les partenariats actuels de Nike dans le domaine de la fabrication, y compris les genres de sous-traitance classiques, à savoir capacité et complémentarité, ainsi que de nouveaux genres. Pour commencer l'article examine l'histoire de l'industrie de la chaussure et celle de la société. L'analyse porte sur une compréhension de la production mondiale des chaussures 'Nike' en termes de la nouvelle division du travail, des caractéristiques et du genre de la désintégration verticale et de la sous-traitance de la production, et du débat actuel concernant la souplesse des modes de production industriels. On démontre que le système de sous-traitance de Nike permet à l'entreprise une marge d'adaptation importante sur des marchés porteurs ou incertains. Pour conclure on propose que le mode de production de Nike représente une autre interprétation post-Fordiste de l'organisation industrielle par rapport à la fabrication dite 'spécialisée, souple'. Im Laufe seiner 25-jährigen Geschichte hat NIKE eine Reihe komplizierter Produktion-sverbindungen mit Herstellern in Südostasien entwickelt. Die Herstellung von Schuhwerk für Sportler wird jetzt auf dem Wege verschiedenartiger Übereinkommen mit Zulieferanten bewerkstelligt. Auf dem Hintergrund von Gesprächen mit Vertretern der Gesellschaft beschreibt dieser Aufsatz Einzelheiten gegenwärtiger Produktionspartnerschaften von NIKE, die konventionelle Kapazität und zusätzliche Arten der Zulieferung sowie neuere Formen einschliessen. Die Studie beginnt mit einem kurzen Abriss der Geschichte der Sportschuhindustrie und dieser Firma. Die Analyse wendet sich an das Verständnis für globale Produktion von NIKE-Schuhen in Bezug auf die Neue Internationale Arbeitsteilung, die Art und Form vertikaler Disintegration und Produktionszulieferung, und die gegewärtige Debatte über die Anpassungsfähigkeit industrieller Systeme. Die Autoren zeigen, dass NIKEs Zuliefersystem der Gesellschaft einen hohen Grad an Beweglichkeit in dynamischen und im Fluss befindlichen Märkten gestattet. Die Autoren schliessen mit dem Hinweis, dass NIKEs Produktionssystem eine alternative, das Fordsche Konzept industrieller Organisation ablösende Vision 'flexibel spezialisierter' Manufaktur darstellt.
