Abstract Analytical relationships are derived for non‐catalytic first order diffusion influenced reaction between a gas and solid sphere of dimension which varies with extent of reaction. Bulk mass transport and diffusion through the product layer are assumed to occur in series with chemical reaction. The limiting case of totally volatile product is also treated. The fluid phase transport coefficient is incorporated as a general function of particle size and fluid velocity. The extent of reaction‐time relationship is more significantly affected by particle size change during reaction than by the functionality governing the bulk mass transport coefficient variation with geometry and velocity.
