RECENT work by Reid A. BrysonI has shown a clear link between the boreal foresttundra boundary in central Canada and the mean summer location of the Arctic frontal zone, but as F. Kenneth Hare2 has pointed out, the cause of this relationship is uncertain. It may be that the vegetation zones reflect particular air-mass conditions, or alternatively that the locus of the front may itself be determined by differences in meteorological properties of the two zones, such as albedo, aerodynamic roughness, and moisture budget. It seems worthwhile to examine the possibility that a similar relationship exists in Eurasia, particularly in view of the fact that R. G. Barry3 has questioned the degree to which the vegetation boundary in eastern North America is correlated with the Arctic front as defined by Canadian meteorologists in terms of the boundary between continental Arctic (cA) and maritime Arctic (mA) air. This paper presents a preliminary analysis of readily available weather-map data for Eurasia. The conclusions are necessarily tentative, but we consider the findings to be of sufficient interest to warrant presentation.
