This study demonstrates the application of a morphological generalization system to a set of areal features with complex relations (city blocks). It evaluates its effectiveness using a set of indexes derived from a comparison of the automated results with manual generalizations. The results show that this system can be used as a first approach for an automatic or semiautomatic mechanism and that it is also a more objective method for solving scale change problems in urban maps.
