Audiometric Zero for Air Conduction: A Verification and Critique of International Standards

The international standard of audiometric zero for normal hearing by air conduction was originally given only for laboratory reference earphones. Subsequently, it has been extended to cover earphones in general audiometric use, and in other ways. A new determination is described in which these derived standards are tested by comparison with the measured thresholds of hearing of 108 subjects in the age range 18–30 years. Particular attention is paid to the otological classification of the subjects and its relation to the description of otological normality in the ISO standards. Suggestions for adjustment of the standards at certain frequencies are made.La norme internationale concernant les valeurs du zéro audiométrique pour l'audition normale par conduction aerienne fut, à l'origine, établie seulement pour des écouteurs de référence utilisés en laboratoire. Puis la norme fut étendue à l'emploi d'écouteurs couramment utilisés en audiométrie quotidienne.Nous décrivons ici une nouvelle détermination dans laquelle ces valeurs dérivées sont testées par comparaison avec les seuils d'audition mesurés sur 108 sujets d'âge compris entre 18 et 30 ans. Nous avons porté une attention particulière à la classification otologique des sujets et au rapport de cette dernière avec la description de la normalité otologique d'après les normes de l'ISO. Nous proposons une modification des valeurs normalisées pour certaines fréquences.
