A statistical analysis based on a study of battered wives in shelters was done. As predicted before the study, the wives' economic dependence on their husbands almost always ensured that they would return to their husbands. Another finding was that respondents who considered the shelters useful had a higher probability of returning to their husbands. A review of the literature is included.
