This report presents an initial look at findings from the long-awaited 2004 Workplace Employment Relations Survey (WERS 2004), which gives the most comprehensive account of the state of employment relations and working life in British workplaces. This survey is the fifth in the WERS series, and hence allows comparison with working life in 1998, 1990, 1984 and 1980. The First Findings report concentrates on results from 2004, in key areas such as segmentation of employment, recruitment and training, work organisation, employee representation and consultation, reward and remuneration, workplace conflict, equal opportunities, work–life balance and management–employee relations, highlighting some areas of change since 1998.
