SUMMARY It is noted that the suddenness of grief and loss awakens individuals to their own spiritual journey. Studies have shown that spirituality increases when death is faced (Derrickson 1996; Millison Irion 1988). This paper, part of a larger PhD study, reports conversations with patients as to their spiritual ‘journey.’ Their responses were categorised using a three step framework generated by Chandler (1999) which incorporates elements of grief from Perlman, and Takaacs (1990). Their responses give some indication as to their level of ‘despair’ and ‘hope’ whilst on their spiritual journey and gives health care providers guidance as to how to assist patients with their spiritual needs.
