ABSTRACT A survey was conducted in three hostels in the eastern suburbs of Syndey. One hundred residents were interviewed. Using the Mental Status Questionnaire, 15% were considered to have significant dementia. About 20% scored as depressed on the Brief Assessment Schedule. D.S.M. III criteria for dementia were fulfilled by 13% and for affective disorder were fulfilled by 16%. Clearly, these hostels look after a population which is very different from those in nursing homes. Admitting an increased proportion of persons with moderate dementia would not be feasible without increased staffing and changes in management policies.
