This article reviews the current contribution of the determination of biochemical markers to clinical cardiology and discusses some important developments in this field. Under investigation are two classes of indicators: markers of early injury/ischemia and markers of coronary plaque instability and disruption. Finally, with the characterization of the cardiac natriuretic peptides, Laboratory Medicine is also assuming part in the assessment of cardiac function.
