Turbo codes are among the most powerful known error control codes and open up the possibility of approaching channel capacity with hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) systems. We implement an HARQ system via rate-compatible puncturing of a rate 1/3 turbo code. The puncturing is implemented using a parity spreading interleaver. Simulation results show throughput performances within 1 dB of channel capacity in additive white Gaussian noise channels. Performance in fully interleaved Rayleigh fading channels is also excellent.
