This paper presents a visual program navigation system using our proposals for MPEG-7, these are adopted as MPEG-7 XM. MPEG-7 supports two levels of description, a low-level and a high-level. The former is designed to capture signal processing based features, and the latter is intended to represent semantic features. We show an implementation example of a personalized digital recorder (PDR) application, which uses both levels. It uses a color layout descriptor for image retrieval. The image retrieval efficiency is quite high in spite of its high-speed retrieval with low cost description. A content personalization interface is also implemented using a set of meta information and provides a variety of content visualization functions.
