Physiol. 25(6): 679-688. 1968.-Q d ua riceps muscle temperatures (Tm) were measured by thermocouples inside indwelling Teflon catheters (6 cm deep) and needle probes (used intermittently) on four healthy male subjects dressed in shorts, while pedaling a bicycle ergometer (50 rpm) at 27, 46, and 72oj, of maximal oxygen uptake (4.38 liters/min) and at lo”, 20”, and 30 ” air tempera-ture (Ta; RH 4OoJ,). There are marked temperature gradients within the muscles studied. With the onset of exercise T, rises rapidlv from resting levels of 35O rt 2 ’ and within 3-5 min is above ’ the rectal temperature (T,), and reaches a relative equilibrium after lo-20 min of exercise. The difference T,-T, after 30-60 min of exercise is 0.65 C in ambient tempera-tures of 10 and 20 C, and 0.95 C in a 30 C environment. The value of T,-T, is independent of the level of exercise. T,
