The conformation of a protein molecule in a crystal depends on the amino acid sequence, the surrounding liquid and the intermolecular contacts. By comparing the structures of the same molecule in two different crystal forms grown in different media, one obtains information about the influence of the medium and of the lattice contacts on the conformation of a protein molecule.
Drenth et al. (1972) studied this question.
