This review examines the state of the art of functional assessment of the elderly as reported in the literature from 1984 to 1988. Numerous functional assessments, especially regarding self care, have resulted in a vast amount of data. Private and public financial resources have been allocated towards supporting reliability and validity studies of selected assessments. This review should guide allied health professionals to choose the most appropriate assessment procedures.
