Besides Microsoft and IBM, Philips Research is one of the key players and made recently a considerable step forward by opening a first prototype, called Home Lab (Aarts, 2002). One of the central concepts in the idea for the HomeLab is Ambient Intelligence (see box 1) (Aarts, Harwig, Schuurmans, 2001).
