This article demonstrates that while shopping is seldom mentioned as a primary reason for travel, it is perhaps the most universal of tourist activities. A study of tourist-visitors to a major southern city revealed shopping to be tourists' most popular activity and il lustrated the economic importance of tourist shopping to local merchants.
