The identification of specific areas of extrastriate cortex of the monkey has been an impetus for the study of higher-order processing in the visual system. The identification of additional areas, analysis of their interconnections, and delineation of the visual properties of cells in these areas have strengthened the view that visual processing is carried out in a series of different areas (for review, see Van Essen 1985; Maunsell and Newsome 1987).
