An important strategy by which biological science has progressed has been the tacitly agreed targeting of numerous investigators' efforts on a relatively few organisms chosen to represent various levels of biological complexity. Bacteriophage λ is one of the best-studied of the bacteriophages, a diverse set of viruses that multiply in bacterial cells, and the host for λ, Escherichia coli, is certainly the cell about which we know the most in terms of genetics, physiology, molecular biology, and biochemistry.
