HE host-range phenotype has provided a very useful and productive tool in the T studies of mutation and recombination in the bacteriophages. It, therefore, becomes of interest to search for additional host range mutants, to study the distribution of these markers in the T2 linkage groups, and, finally, to explore the mechanism of phenotypic expression of these genes a t a level where a direct chemical approach can be made. LURIA (1945) described host range as a genetic character of T2 which is dependent upon the adsorption of the phage to the bacterial cell. Using the adsorption and efficiency of plating of phage as phenotypes, HERSHEY and DAVIDSON (1951) found several alleles a t the known h (host-range) locus as well as a second locus affecting the host range.
