Despite the considerable 'hype' surrounding the rapid growth of tourism in Britain, relatively little is known about the real potential for employment creation. This paper investigates the level of demand for different types of tourism and of the employment associated with these. Detailed reviews are provided of the accommodation, catering, travel and transport, and tourism attraction sectors. Company structures and new forms of tourism provision are highlighted as being particularly important in determining the numbers and types of jobs available in any locality. The conclusion highlights the need for further detailed investigation of the tourist industry, especially of the organisation of production and the resulting employment trends.
