Abstract The investigations, which form the subject of this paper, were begun by me in the autumn of 1897, at the suggestion of Professor Marshall Ward. My chief aim was to study the nature and properties of the so-called “nitragin,” a patent germ-fertiliser, recently introduced by Drs. Nobbe and Hiltner for use in agriculture.
